2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming seems uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
