British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with An additional 11 Nations
British government has added 11 new nations to its travel warning list regarding the risks of methanol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.
The revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.
Only a few weeks ago, officials had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following multiple serious events such as the deadly death of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within 12–48 hours.
What is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for drinking.
