Former FBI Head James Comey Enters Denial Plea to Charges of Lying Lawmakers

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a legislative process.

His lawyer entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was charged shortly after Trump pushed his attorney general to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative advised the court they intended to file multiple legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a trial, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a government lawyer was unlawfully assigned to take over the case.

James Comey's proceedings was initially overseen by Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into a different rival - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey appeared in positive mood as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was supported by his partner, his wife and offspring his daughter, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the judge read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was fired about four months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

While in office, the director sparked a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege James Comey provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he misled the Senate by saying he had not authorized someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations details about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, hinder and delay" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Personal Comments

In a video the former director published to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have known for years that there are ramifications to opposing Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The charges against the former director came after Trump published on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecute the former director and other people.
