Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback reveals that popular personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond beforehand to obtain a strong position there. Rosie, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Sinner in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This raises an important query: In what way is this character powerful enough to elevate Alastor over every other Demonic Sinners?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that involves a great deal, leading into the third season,” the showrunner states. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The solution could be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I am thrilled for fans to witness it.”
It is uncertain the duration the audience will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she says withholding on those details is a crucial aspect of keeping the second season's attention in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with infernal beings, or stories that have mysteries, is giving the audience just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and letting that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The creator promises that season 3 will address the questions fans have been asking, such as why Rosie commanded Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which diminished his power in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these individuals are doing, and all that — it contributes to a larger story,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode provides a further look into what the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as humans, the second after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical mortal appearance in episode 2. She explains that significant consideration went into the visual creation of these forms.
“The human versions of the characters hold great significance,” she notes. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion within the team between choosing a design that symbolizes the personality, versus going with something that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had long hair of that style in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we think the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to view additional of what the human forms look like.”
