{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when safety workers were observed on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit safety personnel can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was informed that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"During the third lap, track officials were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy personnel were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
