Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Squad to Face Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-match ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected call-up.

Recent Form Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI team after managing only a single run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI innings.

Labuschagne has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Team Updates

Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

He has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia search for a fix to their opening batting issues.

Bowling Returns and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures

Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a 2-0 series win last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
