Overwhelmed HK Inhabitants Stunned as Massive Inferno Destroys Residential Buildings
"Approaching the scene, the heat intensifies and you can experience it, with the smoke being extremely heavy."
Young scholar Thomas Liu was among the numerous individuals gathered at the scene of a fatal inferno that swept through large portions of the eight-building residential estate in the region's northern district.
A minimum of thirty-six individuals have lost their lives in yesterday's devastating blaze to date, with numerous still unaccounted for, leading to expectations that this count will likely grow.
"This is a catastrophe," the witness stated about the blaze, noting that he had seen a victim being taken away from the location.
More than a 1,000 further people were compelled to leave the development as the blaze expanded, with several going to established facilities that have been organized to accommodate them.
The fire is progressively being controlled, but emergency responders report they are uncertain when it will be entirely extinguished.
Fire could be seen coming from individual apartments as many residents looked on in quiet.
"I'm overwhelmed. The building contains so numerous friends and friends. I do not know what is occurring now. Observe, all the apartments are just ablaze. I am unsure what to do. I pray the authorities can assist us to rebuild after this."
One local woman stated that her friends reside inside the building and she was staying to learn if they managed to escape.
An elderly inhabitant, who has resided in building number two of the Wang Fuk Court for more than 40 years, described hearing "a very loud noise" and observing fire break out in a adjacent structure.
"I promptly went to my apartment to pack up my possessions," the senior occupant stated.
"I am uncertain how I feel at this moment. I'm just considering about where I'm going to stay tonight because I likely will not go back home."
While the source of the fire that consumed the numerous multi-story buildings is still undetermined, the fire are suspected to have rapidly expanded through the bamboo scaffolding that covered the structures, which were experiencing refurbishments.
Some people have voiced outrage that such a massive incident could have happened and questioned the response.
"In cases where there's a brush fire, they will deploy helicopters and drop extinguishing materials, but why is there not any action and how can they allow further buildings ablaze?" inquired another resident of the estate.
"This area is so close to the fire department and we thought the blaze could be put out rapidly, but now the flames has expanded. I'm so disheartened," she continued.
The resident mentioned that she had been given minimal direction from the authorities on where to seek assistance.
Multiple Tai Po residents had brought necessities to the victims - including dozens of warm layers and warming devices.
When asked about their emotions regarding the blaze, inhabitants voiced that "the government is unprepared" and that they were "extremely devastated".
"We desire not to see any further victims," remarked one.
An older lady who lives in a unit within the impacted blocks mentioned she was away when the incident ignited but that she is anxious about her residence because it is uninsured.
"I'm profoundly upset that I have no home to go to at present," she concluded.
