The Latest Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to the Game
The seasonal content update for Minecraft has arrived β and it features the first new weapon added to the title since the mace made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it has the potential to change how you play Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," explained a senior product manager. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the use case."
If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is a major functions for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and inflict more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [itβs] tailor-made for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and going out and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.
In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay.
Another significant inclusion in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for a breath.
The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus β or the regular one, for that matter β with a blowfish.
"We've been thinking about this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also introduce something for underwater," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus concept art looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you encounter underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Other additions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while atop a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
All told, the final game drop of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own β and the potential for chaos β would have constituted a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
